Before Blu Pi there was One Sound; A popular local band from Akron, OH. The original members included Jai Latimore on drums, now leader of Jazz/R&b band Blu Pi and aspiring business man managing multiple local bands throughout Ohio. Recording artist Kofi Boakye on keys, now leader of Jazz/funk band Kofi Boakye & Yours Truly as well as juggling a successful solo career. Kofi's CD "Made In Akron" has been on heavy rotation on Ohio's largest Jazz Network 107.3 The Wave. And recording artist Ashton Blake on sax now member of jazz/fusion band Copali. Ashton's CD "Broke & Happy" just dropped last month. When Jai couldn't get his members to cover the gig he called on his old friends and they were more than happy to help out.
The trio reunited last week to help Blu Pi keep their annual Jazz commitment to the Union-A-Palooza, to kick off another school year at the University of Akron (UA). To top things off, the band also included an local legend to sit in on bass. Frank Gauthier, leader of old school band Multiple Choice joined the trio to make it an unforgettable night.
Brandon Wise, a employee at UA and a follower of One Sound said its good to see the original band perform together again. Ethan Bricker, a student at UA was part of the audience that night. He said part of his homework was to attend a UA event and write about it. Being a musician himself he thought that this would be a good opportunity to network, listen to live music and get some extra credit in his class. Ethan said this was a great experience and he had a great time. He also said he will continue to follow Blu Pi for upcoming events. It's not everyday, that you get a chance to see these guys perform together but while their assignments have changed, their agenda is still the same. One Stage, One Purpose, One Sound.
